History
The classic bistro interior could easily make you believe that Bistro Jarl has been there forever. But the truth is that the restaurant opened in 1987 when architect Peter von Fábry-Eichner was commissioned to create a living dining room and meeting place inspired by 19th century Paris. With the help of skilled craftsmen, the genuine feeling was brought to life. The woodwork was made out of solid pinewood and the walls and pillars were painted using traditional marbling techniques, among others by the painters who restored Drottningholm Palace.
The property on Birger Jarlsgatan 7 dates from 1888 and the premises formerly housed a telegraph office as well as a fashion boutique and a hamburger restaurant. During the 1990s Bistro Jarl became one of the centres around which Stockholm's nightlife revolved, and in 2003 the much longed-for bar was built. It immediately became famous for its selection of Champagnes and fantastic atmosphere.
In recent times the terrace has gained more space. Today it accommodates 45 guests, almost as many as in the indoor dining room. Next in line for an expansion is the wine cellar, which is shortly expected to hold significantly more bottles.
Since 1997 Bistro Jarl is owned and managed by Per Nordlind, who formerly managed Villa Pauli in Djursholm.
“Nothing would be more tiresome than eating and drinking if God had not made them a pleasure as well as a necessity.”Voltaire
